Bloat
Gastric Torsion and Volvulus

What is it? It is a filling of the stomach with gas, which may cause the stomach to rotate, taking the spleen with it. This is an emergency condition that requires immediate veterinary attention. Even though the Leonberger has a build (large and deep-chested) similar to breeds that are very prone to this, we don't lose very many dogs to bloat.
Symptoms:Dogs with bloat are usually uncomfortable, panting, drooling, retching, and they may also have a firm, distended stomach.
Diagnosis:X-rays are usually taken to confirm the diagnosis
Treatment:Management consists of passing a stomach tube to release air and fluid from the stomach. If the tube cannot be passed or X-rays reveal rotation of the stomach, then emergency surgery must be performed.
