The
owners of the following dogs have graciously allowed us to post their names to
help people understand a bit more about the distribution (as far as we know it
today) of LP/PN in the Leonberger population. Most importantly, we would like
for Leo people to be able to identify if their dogs are related to any of the
dogs listed as it is critical to collect blood samples for DNA studies as well
as muscle and nerve biopsies (pre- or post-mortem) on as many individuals as possible
in order for us to decipher the mode of inheritance and possibly develop a carrier
test. All of these dogs had/have various symptoms of a polyneuropathy.
PLEASE
NOTE: Not all Leonbergers with symptoms of a neuropathy or of laryngeal paralysis
are affected with our Inherited Polyneuropathy.
We also want you to know
that this list is not representative of all the the lines in which we have diagnosed
Inherited Leonberger Polyneuropathy. In addition, we strongly caution people against
the use of this list for breeding purposes until we can better determine how it
is passed from one generation to the next, except to say that, at this time, it
is unwise to breed a full brother or sister of an affected dog/bitch.
All
of the dogs listed below were diagnosed both by clinical signs and by muscle and
nerve biopsies, and in several cases by nerve conduction studies. Please email
Virginia Bartholomay
in order to submit your dog's name to this list.
