Perianal Fistulas

What is it? Perianal fistulas are chronic deep, draining, infected sacs located around the anus which do not heal. They may look similar to anal gland abscesses, but are often more extensive and very difficult to clear up. Some fistulas are apparent, some hide internally unseen. Perianal fistulas are very painful and the exact cause has not been determined.
Symptoms:Include multiple deep draining infected sacs around the anus. Other possible symptoms include licking under tail, scooting, dark bloody stools, diarrhea, constipation, flatulence, eating grass, fetid odor, and progressively smaller and more frequent defecation.
Diagnosis:By physical examination
Treatment:

Many different treatment regimens have been tried, including antibiotics, immunosuppressive drugs, and tail amputations. This disease is often difficult to clear up and has a poor prognosis.

It is a familial disease in other breeds and data suggests it is inherited in Leonbergers as well. We highly recommend that dogs with this disease not be bred.
