Temperament

The majority of Leonbergers show the affectionate, confident, and friendly temperament that is desired in the breed. There is a small percentage of Leos that are aggressive towards small children, which is very concerning in a breed that is touted as a family companion dog. The results of the last survey confirm that many Leos are protective. We also have some dogs that show a clear tendency towards aggression to people, which is intolerable. We highly recommend socialization and obedience training throughout a dog's life, but more so in the first two years, especially in assertive individuals. We hope to see a mandatory temperament test for breeding dogs to ensure an optimal Leonberger temperament in our breeding stock.
