What is an Open Registry?
An Open Registry is a database that is open to all persons who care to participate either by sending data to be recorded or by persons wishing to research the available data for information.

Is participation mandatory?
No! Participation in this project is purely voluntary.

What health data will be included?
The Health Committee (HREC) will determine the data to be included based upon reported conditions that appear to have a genetic origin and have either become or are becoming a problem in the US Leonberger population.

Can dogs with no health problems be recorded?
Absolutely! The HREC encourages everyone to participate and to include information on all dogs with or without health problems.

How is data being reported?
The HREC proposes to use data collected in the most recent health survey. Going forward, there will be a form that can be completed and submitted for entry to the database.

Can health survey data be used without permission?
No! Anyone wishing to participate in the Open Health Registry will have to sign a consent form before health survey information will be used.

Why is an Open Health Registry important?
It is a tool. For breeders, it is a tool to help them develop a breeding program that would promote a longer, healthier life for our Leonbergers. It is also a research tool for anyone who wants to be able to track health conditions that have a genetic or partially genetic origin.

Whose idea is this?
It's yours! For some time, both the HREC as well as a great many LCA members have been asking for an Open Health Registry. It is becoming a reality at their suggestion and request.
